US Midterm Results: Crude Prices May Fall, but Russian Oil Imports Face New Hurdles
The US midterm elections resulted in a Democratic Party victory, giving it control of both houses of Congress. This has raised expectations for potential diplomatic peace talks regarding the Iran conflict, which could stabilize fuel transport through the Strait of Hormuz and lead to a sustained decline in global crude oil prices. Following the election results, international Brent crude oil prices fell 8.7% to $94.62 per barrel on Wednesday. For India, the world's third-largest oil importer, lower prices could reduce import costs and ease inflationary pressures, though a Democratic-controlled Congress may complicate the Trump administration's ability to ease sanctions on Russia, potentially creating new difficulties for India's oil imports from Russia, its largest crude supplier. India's oil import bill rose 46.4% year-on-year to $90.6 billion in the first six months of the current fiscal year. While lower global prices would benefit India, stricter US sanctions on Russia could make payments, tanker arrangements, and insurance for Russian oil more difficult and costly for Indian refiners, potentially offsetting the benefits of discounted Russian barrels.
