White House tells Democrats: Trump is still president after midterm losses
The White House posted "Trump is still your president" on X after Democrats made major gains in the 2026 midterm elections, flipping more than two dozen House seats and at least seven Senate seats. Democrats won Senate races in South Carolina, North Carolina, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Texas and Maine, with historic victories including Adam Hamilton as Kansas's first Democratic senator since 1932 and Abdul El-Sayed as the first Muslim elected to the Senate. Democrats also secured Georgia's governorship and made House gains across multiple states. President Trump attributed Republican losses partly to the Iran war, expressed surprise at the results, and has cancelled public appearances following the defeats. Republicans found consolation in Florida, where Byron Donalds became the state's first Black governor.
