Zelenskiy hopes Democratic midterm gains will boost US support for Ukraine

thestar.com.my —

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Wednesday he hopes Democratic gains in the US midterm elections will lead to increased American support for Ukraine in its 4-1/2-year war with Russia. Zelenskiy told Germany's ZDF television that Democrats taking control of both congressional chambers would benefit Kyiv, noting they "speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine" and renewing US-Europe ties, while adding he is also grateful to Republicans. He said stronger US financial and military assistance could positively impact Russian President Vladimir Putin. The comments come amid an uneven relationship with President Donald Trump, who recently made Russia-friendly moves including easing sanctions. US-led trilateral talks with Ukraine and Russia are scheduled to resume in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11.
