Democrats win control of Congress in 2026 midterms
Republicans have lost their majorities in both chambers of the US Congress, according to projections for the 2026 midterm elections. The Democrats are projected to win a large majority in the House of Representatives and a clear majority in the Senate. In the House, the AP projects Democrats will win 263 seats to the Republicans' 172, with 218 needed for a majority. In the Senate, Democrats are projected to hold 55 seats to the Republicans' 44, flipping seats in seven states including Texas, Ohio, and North Carolina. Democratic gubernatorial candidates also won in four states previously held by Republicans, including Texas, Iowa, Ohio, and Georgia. Over 57 million Americans voted early, and the election cycle saw record spending of more than $11 billion.
