Democrats win Senate majority, flipping seven Republican-held seats
Democrats won control of the US Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, flipping seven Republican-held seats in a major wave that also secured their majority in the House of Representatives. The party defeated incumbent Republican senators in Maine, Ohio, and South Carolina, and won open seats in Texas, North Carolina, Iowa, and Kansas, including in states that had not elected a Democratic senator in decades. Democrats now hold at least 54 Senate seats, with two races still uncalled. The victories extended beyond the Senate, as Democrats also flipped gubernatorial races in Ohio, Iowa, and Texas, and gained numerous House districts. The results mark a significant setback for President Donald Trump and give Democrats control of both chambers of Congress.
