Democrats win Senate, House, and most governorships, VOA projects
Democrats have won majorities in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, according to VOA and other projections, shifting the balance of power in the final two years of President Donald Trump's term. Democrats flipped at least seven Senate seats in Tuesday's midterm elections, including in traditionally Republican strongholds like Texas and South Carolina. With two races still uncounted, Democrats are projected to hold a 54-44 majority, including two independent senators who caucus with them. In the House, Democrats lead 228-139 with 68 races undecided, including flips in districts Trump won easily in 2024. Trump told Fox News Democrats "did well" but did not view the results as a referendum on his presidency, citing veto power and potential cooperation. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called the wins a "generational reshaping" focused on lowering family costs. Notable victors include Texas' James Talarico, Maine's Troy Jackson, and Kansas' Adam Hamilton. Democrats also won a majority of governorships for the first time since 2006, leading 28-20 with two races pending.
