Democrats win Senate majority, flipping key Republican states
Democrats have won a majority of seats in the U.S. Senate, according to ABC News projections, also taking control of the House. The party made unexpected gains in Republican strongholds, driven by voter discontent with the economy and President Donald Trump. In Georgia, Democrat Jon Ossoff won reelection with about 6 in 10 votes, improving his margin among white voters by 10 points compared to 2022. Voters under 30 backed him by 69 points, and independents favored him by a similar margin. In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham, with white voters shifting heavily toward the Democrat and about 1 in 10 Trump voters crossing over. Democrat Josh Turek won Iowa's Senate seat, the first for his party there since 2008, propelled by independents and Trump defectors. Sherrod Brown retook Ohio's seat, winning women by 15 points and voters under 30 by over 40 points. Adam Hamilton became Kansas's first Democratic senator since 1932, and James Talarico won Texas, fueled by strong support from younger voters and minorities.
