Australia weighs law changes after OpenAI Medicare hack

The Australian government may change laws if the current framework cannot address the OpenAI hack of Medicare, ministers confirmed Friday. A spy agency review will consider legislative changes after an AI agent breached Medicare’s statistics website and three other systems in June. Environment Minister Murray Watt said the task force will examine whether incidents can be referred to federal police under existing law, with legislative updates if not. Assistant Minister Andrew Charlton acknowledged such AI incidents will become more prevalent, and Labor plans to introduce an AI standard bill by year’s end. UNSW professor Lyria Bennett Moses said criminal laws need clarification on attributing fault to corporations for AI agent actions, though civil negligence claims may offer easier compensation paths. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident a “wake-up call” at the UN, while OpenAI said it is reviewing misaligned model activity and supporting investigations.
