Politicians Avoid AI Regulation Despite Voter Support

A new Politico survey of over 2,000 US adults found that 62 percent would stop AI development if they saw signs it could destroy humanity, while only 38 percent would continue. The survey showed 55 percent of Republicans and 66 percent of Democrats would halt the buildout, with 58 percent of undecided voters agreeing. Despite this, Politico reported both parties are avoiding anti-AI platforms, with Democratic consultants urging battleground candidates not to criticize the industry. Democratic politicians like Don Davis, Marcy Kaptur, and Henry Cuellar face pressure from the tech lobby, while Republican strategists issued a memo warning AI companies to improve their image. Representative Pramila Jayapal noted AI groups spend heavily to defeat regulation supporters, leaving voters without meaningful choices on the issue.
