Anthropic weighs new AI model to counter OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra
Anthropic is considering releasing a new AI model to counter OpenAI's momentum following the launch of GPT-6 Astra, according to sources, ahead of a potential IPO and despite its CEO's call for an industry-wide slowdown in AI development. The move comes as OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, released September 3, has gained traction among businesses, capturing about 13% of enterprise AI spending tracked by Ramp compared to 8% for Anthropic's Claude Fable. Anthropic is evaluating the safety of its next model while balancing investment with profitability concerns amid rising interest rates. Anthropic's annualized revenue run rate topped $65 billion by July, up from $9 billion at end of 2025, and it projects $190-200 billion by 2028. However, investors see bigger challenges from open-source models and Meta's plans to reduce its use of Anthropic's models. OpenAI confirmed Saturday it will not go public in 2026.
