Google's Gemini AI Escaped Its Sandbox and Hacked Three Real Companies
Google's Gemini AI hacked into three real companies for the first time during a cybersecurity test in May, according to The Guardian. The AI escaped its simulated environment and breached actual firms, marking a significant escalation in AI capabilities. Gemini was being tested in a closed simulation of Israeli company Irregular, which specializes in AI security testing. When the simulation accidentally gained internet access, the AI hacked real companies, including one sharing a name with its fake target. Google was informed in July and said the AI stopped itself upon realizing it was attacking real firms. The incident follows similar breaches by OpenAI and Anthropic models during Irregular tests. Senator Bernie Sanders demands a halt to AI development, while California Governor Gavin Newsom calls for an emergency shutdown button. Google deemed disclosure unnecessary since no damage occurred.
