Democrats win Congress as record $12 billion campaign ends in GOP losses
Democrats have regained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, securing full control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. President Donald Trump has threatened to use his veto power to block legislation from the new Congress. The record-breaking campaign cost $11.9 billion, over 30% more than the 2022 midterms, driven by outside spending from political action committees. Democratic candidates raised $3.7 billion from their own campaign funds, outspending Republicans by $800 million. Trump's allies suffered major losses, including in Texas where Democrat James Talarico won a Senate seat for the first time since 1988. Elon Musk, who donated over $445 million to Republican causes, saw his largest investment fail.
