US won't back Bolsonaro's claim to Brazil's presidency, Reuters reports

estadao.com.br (Portuguese) —

The Trump administration does not plan to support defeated Brazilian candidate Flávio Bolsonaro's claim to be the country's leader, according to anonymous sources cited by Reuters, though the US helped him flee Brazil and Trump could still change his mind. Trump has publicly said he would not get involved in the case but called the Brazilian election "a disgrace" and said he would discuss the dispute with re-elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with whom he claims a good relationship. Bolsonaro lost the October 25 runoff to Lula, who won a fourth term with 51.77% of valid votes, but refused to concede and left the country. He was summoned to surrender his passports but fled via Argentina to Miami, using an Italian passport for entry into Argentina and a diplomatic one for the US.
