Rubio denies US role in Flavio Bolsonaro's move to America
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that the Trump administration facilitated Flavio Bolsonaro's departure to the US after his election defeat in Brazil, stating "We didn't facilitate anything." Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday following the State Department's decision to grant him and his family US visas. Rubio told reporters in Atlanta that Bolsonaro had previously held a visa and that President Trump made a decision to allow him entry, though the US government was not "involved directly in any of the moves that were made." Bolsonaro, who refused to concede and called the elections fraudulent without evidence, faces investigations for corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion in Brazil. Bolsonaro, who had Trump's tacit support in the election, declared himself the "true president-elect of Brazil" in a letter, later softening the term to "leader." His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup after refusing to acknowledge his 2022 loss to Lula.
