Brazil summons Argentine diplomat over Bolsonaro's flight to US
Brazil summoned Argentina's top diplomat in Brasilia to explain Buenos Aires' role in Senator Flavio Bolsonaro's departure to the US after his election loss, two Brazilian government sources said Friday, though Argentina denied the summoning. The move escalates diplomatic friction between the neighboring countries. The foreign ministry received charge d'affaires Maria Emilia Cortes on Thursday, with the South America Department director present. This follows Brazil's August downgrade of ties after President Javier Milei insulted President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro crossed into Argentina with family Tuesday before flying to Miami via Ecuador. Bolsonaro, son of imprisoned ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, thanked Milei for assistance in a letter. His departure violated a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender passports amid a money-laundering probe he denies. Argentina's foreign minister Pablo Quirno said no explanation was requested.
