CIA warns Russia may launch sea-based drone attacks on Spain, France, or Italy

pravda.com.ua (Ukrainian) —

The CIA has warned European diplomats about Russian plans to launch drone attacks against Spain, France, or Italy, according to a report from El Mundo. The drones would be launched from ships at sea, targeting these Mediterranean countries ahead of upcoming elections. The detailed intelligence report was prepared after CIA Director John Ratcliffe's visit to Moscow. Russia reportedly plans to use "Gerbera" drones with a 600-kilometer range, launched from containers on ships. The attacks aim to close airports, cause fires, or demonstrate Russia's reach into Europe rather than cause significant destruction. The warning coincides with French President Emmanuel Macron's unusual September 16 defense council meeting and subsequent talks with party leaders. Analysts confirm the report circulated among European foreign ministries. Russia has previously tested NATO reactions through incidents in Poland and the Baltics, including a September 15 drone shootdown in Lithuania and a September 23 Mi-8 helicopter incursion into Polish airspace.
