CIA warns Russia may target Spain, France, or Italy with drones from Mediterranean ships
The CIA has warned European governments about a potential Russian drone operation targeting Spain, France, or Italy, with launches possibly conducted from commercial ships in the Mediterranean Sea. The operation could involve Gerbera drones, which are about two meters long with a range of up to 600 kilometers. Sources say launches from 200-300 kilometers offshore could enable flights lasting up to two hours, though the drones carry only small explosive payloads. The warning follows CIA Director John Ratcliffe's visit to Moscow on August 25. Analysts suggest Russia aims to weaken support for Ukraine and sow discord within NATO, with all three named countries holding elections in 2027.
