CIA warns Europe of Russian drone attack plans on Spain, France, Italy

The CIA has reportedly warned European governments that Russia is planning drone attacks on Mediterranean countries, including Spain, France, and Italy, with drones launched from ships, according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo. The warning follows CIA Director John Ratcliffe's surprise visit to Moscow on August 25. The alleged plan involves Gerbera drones, which have a range of up to 600 kilometers, hidden in containers on commercial ships. EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius stated Russia could easily launch drones over Spanish airports and damage the tourism industry. Lithuania, Spain, France, and Italy have been notified, and Italy's largest opposition party is demanding government clarification. All three targeted countries hold elections in 2027, and El Mundo suggests an attack could be exploited politically by forces critical of Ukraine support. Russia has previously been accused of sabotage in European countries but has avoided actions triggering a unified NATO response.
