Who is behind the violence in France?
French authorities are prosecuting hundreds of suspects following weekend riots, with over 800 of approximately 2,500 arrested individuals brought before prosecutors. By Tuesday, 149 people had received prison sentences ranging from five months probation to two years. President Macron blames "ultra-left agitators" and criminals for the violence, while police unions cite far-left members and youth from disadvantaged areas. Extremism researcher Ahmad Mansour claims protests were instrumentalized by left-wing radicals and migrant groups, though he provided no evidence of coordination. Prosecutors say many detainees refuse to state political affiliations, and looters largely come from migrant-dominated Paris suburbs. The Justice Ministry distinguishes between organized left-wing rioters and apolitical looters, with 70 percent of detainees being adult males.
