France Sentences 217 Rioters to Prison After Cost-of-Living Protests

metronieuws.nl (Dutch) —

French courts have sentenced 217 rioters to prison following Saturday's protests against rising costs, with more convictions expected, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced Thursday. Around 2,700 people were arrested in connection with the unrest. Darmanin praised the judiciary's "extremely forceful" response, noting over 1,000 detainees have appeared before judges so far. Half of those sentenced had no prior criminal record, and most were young men aged 18 to 25. The minister hopes the sentences will deter future rioters. Demonstrations against rising living costs turned violent in many places last Saturday, and further protests are planned for the coming weekend.
