Le Pen extends French election lead after riots
Marine Le Pen has gained ground in the first presidential election poll since weekend riots in France, reaching 34 to 38 percent support in the first round depending on the candidate lineup, according to a new Ifop survey. The Rassemblement National leader gained one to two percentage points compared to the previous Ifop poll. Jean-Luc Mélenchon of France's leftist party ranks second with 15 to 20 percent, followed closely by Socialist candidate Raphaël Glucksmann and centrist Édouard Philippe. Incumbent Emmanuel Macron cannot run again after two terms. The survey shows Le Pen ahead in all second-round scenarios regardless of her opponent. However, her July conviction for EU fund embezzlement, which she has appealed, could result in an electronic bracelet during the campaign depending on how quickly the Court of Cassation rules.
