US expands Iran blockade to land borders and Caspian Sea
The United States has created a new task force, "Iron Gate," to block sanctioned weapons and materials from reaching Iran via land borders and the Caspian Sea, extending its existing naval blockade. The task force, based in Tampa, Florida, will coordinate with US government agencies to halt dual-use technology transfers and illegal revenue sources. This follows a Reuters investigation revealing Iran imported at least $2 billion in equipment since January 2025 via Russia, Central Asia, and China. The naval blockade has reportedly prevented over $25 billion in Iranian crude oil exports. However, Iran has circumvented restrictions by disguising fuel shipments near Oman and has responded positively to US midterm election results that weakened President Trump's Republican Party.
