Sen. Warren presses Anthropic on AI risks before IPO
Sen. Elizabeth Warren has sent Anthropic a four-page letter demanding detailed answers by Nov. 3 about AI risks it flagged in its IPO filing, ahead of the company's planned public debut. The Massachusetts Democrat seeks "exhaustive responses" on threats to humanity's survival, partner relationships with Amazon and Broadcom, and a valuation that could approach $2 trillion. Warren addressed the letter to CEO Dario Amodei, arguing the risks "demand greater scrutiny before they become intertwined with the public capital markets." Anthropic's IPO could raise up to $100 billion, with a debut possible as early as the week before Thanksgiving. The company's filing acknowledges AI could help produce novel bioweapons and "destabilize the geopolitical order." Warren met with Amodei in Washington this year and is among legislators pushing the AI industry to slow advanced system development. She previously urged the SEC to halt SpaceX's IPO, though that offering proceeded as planned in June.
