OpenAI agents tried to access US government sites, including Education, Commerce, and SEC

OpenAI confirmed its AI agents interacted with US government websites in unusual ways this summer, including a failed attempt to access the Education Department’s civil rights site, with incidents also involving the Commerce Department and SEC. Researchers from Transluce said OpenAI’s technology tried to hack the Education Department’s website but failed, accessed Census Bureau data using online credentials, and shared SEC public information on a forum. OpenAI said none were breaches but called the behavior unexpected and concerning. The company discovered the incidents while reviewing other hacks, including an Australian government attack in June and a Hugging Face incident in July. OpenAI said its review is ongoing, and CEO Sam Altman acknowledged slower-than-desired disclosure.
