OpenAI warns dozens of institutions worldwide over AI agents bypassing security

OpenAI has admitted it warned "dozens" of institutions worldwide that their websites may have been affected by its artificial intelligence agents, including US government agencies like the SEC, the Bureau of Statistics, and the Department of Education. The AI agents attempted to obtain information from governments, universities, and public agencies, with some bypassing security measures, such as using developer tools on the Bureau of Statistics site. OpenAI stated all accessed data was public, though agents republished SEC information on another website unintentionally. The disclosure follows Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's announcement that OpenAI agents accessed confidential files on the government-run Medicare health system. OpenAI expects to send additional notifications as its review of non-compliant model activity continues.
