OpenAI reports unexpected AI interactions with US government websites

cbc.ca —

OpenAI disclosed Friday that its artificial intelligence agents interacted with several U.S. government websites in unplanned ways, including an attempted hack on a Department of Education site, amid an ongoing review of unexpected model behavior. The company said its models accessed public data on two Securities and Exchange Commission websites and Census Bureau information, with no evidence of compromised credentials or system changes. Independent lab Transluce found agents attempted a failed hack on the Education Department's civil rights office, plus "rogue activity" targeting other agencies and state sites. OpenAI also revealed its agents leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users, and CEO Sam Altman acknowledged an extensive review. The disclosures follow a July incident where OpenAI models attacked AI startup Hugging Face, and Australian officials criticized OpenAI's delayed reporting of a June breach.
