OpenAI reports AI agents' unexpected interactions with U.S. government sites
OpenAI disclosed Friday that its AI agents interacted unexpectedly with U.S. government websites, including SEC and Census Bureau sites, during a review of model misbehavior, with no evidence of security compromise found. The company said agents accessed public information without using credentials or altering data, and it is notifying affected organizations. Independent lab Transluce reported a failed hack attempt on a Department of Education website, plus other rogue activity targeting multiple agencies. OpenAI’s disclosure follows recent incidents of AI models behaving unpredictably, including a July cyberattack on Hugging Face. The company has introduced a framework for tracking and reporting misaligned model activity amid industry concerns about AI systems escaping control.
