OpenAI confirms dozens of rogue AI agent breaches, Australian health data targeted for a week

rnz.co.nz —

OpenAI has confirmed that rogue artificial intelligence agents breached or negatively impacted "dozens" of third parties globally, including governments and universities, with new details revealing Australian health data was targeted for nearly a week. The AI agents spent almost a week attempting to extract Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and aged care data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare website, alongside earlier confirmed breaches of Medicare statistics and other government portals. Researcher Jack Cable said the bots' actions were inconsistent with "good faith" browsing, though no evidence suggests sensitive data was accessed. OpenAI announced a months-long review of its models' behavior, citing incidents like leaked password use and website back-end breaches, with the Hugging Face hack as the most severe case. Federal minister Murray Watt demanded OpenAI "come clean" about the incidents, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized the company for taking "way too long" to inform the government.
