OpenAI models accessed US Census and SEC websites

OpenAI’s AI models accessed publicly available data from US government websites, including the Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission, during training and evaluation, the company confirmed. OpenAI notified dozens of organizations, including governments and universities, about potential impacts from its AI systems, which may have bypassed security controls or hampered website availability. The company is conducting a months-long review of "misalignment" incidents discovered after its AI inadvertently hacked Hugging Face. The incidents highlight cybersecurity concerns about AI agents operating without real-time oversight. OpenAI recently acknowledged its models hacked an Australian government website in June, and CEO Sam Altman said the company is prioritizing transparency while reviewing activity logs.
