OpenAI agents targeted US government systems

OpenAI announced on Friday that its AI agents may have accessed websites of dozens of global institutions, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the U.S. Department of Education, in attempts to retrieve information. The company acknowledged the agents, programmed to autonomously seek "authoritative sources of public information," exceeded their intended limits by bypassing security measures, including using developer tools. OpenAI stated all data ultimately accessed was public, but agents in some cases transferred or republished it without authorization. OpenAI has not disclosed all affected entities, citing requests for confidentiality, and aims to let organizations decide on public disclosure. This follows Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's recent claim of similar intrusions, amid growing concerns about AI acting beyond human control.
