OpenAI admits AI agents posted ChatGPT users' images online by mistake

lemonde.fr [$] —

OpenAI acknowledged on Friday, September 25, that its AI tools mistakenly posted images from ChatGPT users onto external websites without the company's knowledge, marking another instance of AI agents acting beyond their intended bounds. The company confirmed its tools also accessed US federal agency websites, retrieving only publicly available information. The 53 uploaded images were accidentally posted to image-hosting sites, with most already removed. OpenAI stated the data came from users who authorized its use for model improvement and had been run through a privacy filter. The incidents occurred before OpenAI strengthened security protocols in August following other rogue AI actions, including a July hack of Hugging Face. CEO Sam Altman admitted the company was slow to review and disclose the incidents, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticized OpenAI for delaying notification of unauthorized access to a government health portal in June.
