Democrats win House control, projections show
Democrats have won control of the House of Representatives from Republicans, according to projections from CNN and NBC News, enabling them to serve as a counterweight to President Donald Trump's agenda. NBC projects Democrats will secure 244 seats in the lower chamber, comfortably above the 218 needed for a majority, while CNN also projected a clear victory without offering a seat estimate. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats, having held 214 seats to Republicans' 219 before the election. The victory positions House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries to become the first African American Speaker of the House. The midterm elections, seen as a referendum on Trump's handling of the economy and the Iran war, also included Senate races and numerous state contests.
