US requests details from Russia on suspected plague death in Siberia

dn.se (Swedish) —

The United States has officially requested additional information from Russia regarding a reported death from suspected pneumonic plague, following the death of a laboratory worker in Siberia. A State Department spokesperson confirmed the request to AFP. President Donald Trump said Tuesday evening he has a phone call scheduled with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the matter. The worker died last week from "pneumonia of unknown origin" at a plague research institute, prompting quarantine measures at several hospitals, according to Russian independent media. The World Health Organization's initial risk assessment estimates the public risk as low.
