US and WHO press Russia for transparency after Siberian plague lab death
The US and WHO demanded Tuesday that Russia be transparent after the death of a lab technician at a Siberian plague institute, with President Donald Trump saying he will discuss the matter with Vladimir Putin. Russian authorities deny imposing sanitary measures following the death of 28-year-old Daria Chipilova, who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute. The CDC says it is monitoring the situation but sees no broader threat to the US, while WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has requested additional information from Russian health officials. Russian officials attribute the death to pneumonia of undetermined origin, dismissing reports of quarantine measures as false. The WHO assesses the risk as low for Russia and very low for Europe. Pneumonic plague is highly contagious and can be fatal if untreated.
