WHO offers Russia help after suspected plague death in Siberia
The World Health Organization has offered Russia technical assistance to investigate the death of a 28-year-old scientist in Siberia from suspected pneumonic plague. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency is in contact with Russian health authorities and has requested further information. The woman worked at a plague research institute and died Friday in a hospital near Irkutsk. Russian authorities attribute her death to pneumonia of unknown origin, not a plague pathogen, while media reports suggest accidental laboratory release of the bacteria. The WHO emphasized the need for transparent information exchange under international health regulations. Russian officials report no highly dangerous pathogens found in contacts and have completed medical monitoring of all identified individuals.
