Plague lab worker's mother accuses Russian officials of neglect in daughter's death
The mother of a Russian lab technician who died after suspected pneumonic plague exposure has accused officials of neglect, saying doctors "let my daughter die" and questioning the official account of the incident. Darya Shipilova, 28, died on 2 October at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia after reportedly breaking a sample tube. Her mother, Svetlana Shipilova, contested this explanation, saying the tubes are impossible to break, and criticized the medical care her daughter received. About 100 contacts are being monitored in hospital, and the family remains in isolation with no funeral arranged. Moscow says testing has not confirmed plague, and the official cause of death has not yet been provided.
