Trump and Putin to Discuss Suspected Plague Case in Russia's Irkutsk Region
US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will hold a phone call soon to discuss a suspected pneumonic plague case in Russia's Irkutsk region, Trump said, adding that the US is conducting "very deep discussions" on the matter. Trump stated the call would happen "very soon" and that the US could provide more details possibly by the next day. He previously offered US assistance to Russia, describing the plague as a serious disease with stronger pathogens. The World Health Organization assessed the risk of international spread as "very low" and is in contact with Russian authorities. The suspected case emerged in early October when a 28-year-old lab worker at an Irkutsk anti-plague institute died on October 2 after reportedly breaking a test tube containing the pathogen. Around 200 contacts were isolated. On October 6, the US embassy in Moscow issued a warning advising Americans to leave Russia immediately and monitor their health for 14 days if recently in the region.
