WHO sees low public health risk after Siberia plague lab worker death
The World Health Organization (WHO) assessed on October 6 that the public health risk is low following the death of a researcher at a plague control institute in Siberia, Russia. Nearly 200 people have been quarantined in local hospitals. The 28-year-old female laboratory technician died on October 2 from pneumonia of unknown cause. WHO is coordinating with Russian health authorities to monitor the investigation, contact tracing, and test results. All contacts have been identified and are being monitored, with none currently showing symptoms. Russian authorities report the epidemiological situation is stable, and no pathogens related to the institute's work were found in the deceased's samples. No new infections have been reported among staff in the past 10 days. Local media reported the woman accidentally broke a test tube containing plague bacteria, but this remains unconfirmed.
