Siberian Lab Worker Dies: Trump Sees No Sign of Russian Bioweapon

n-tv.de (German) —

A young researcher at a plague institute in Siberia has died from pneumonia of unknown origin, but US President Donald Trump says he does not believe it is linked to a biological weapon. He stated Russia has the situation "very well under control." Trump said he will find out soon and that his announced phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin will happen "very soon." The US State Department has urged Russia to share information transparently. The 28-year-old scientist died Friday near Irkutsk; Russian authorities ruled out plague as the cause. Former German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach called on Russia to cooperate openly with the WHO, stressing transparency is key to preventing epidemics. He added there is currently "no increased risk" for Europe's population. Pneumonic plague is treatable with antibiotics if started early.
