Romanian doctors clarify plague risks after Russia case

realitatea.net (Romanian) —

Romania's College of Physicians issued clarifications about plague after a suspected case in Russia, detailing transmission, clinical forms, and treatment options for the public. The disease, caused by Yersinia pestis, is a zoonosis primarily spread via infected flea bites from rodents, though direct contact and respiratory droplets in pneumonic cases can transmit it. The three main forms are bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic. While bubonic plague has a 30-60% mortality rate without treatment, antibiotics are effective if diagnosed early. The disease remains endemic in countries like the DRC and Madagascar.
