U.S. Embassy Warns Americans of Plague in Irkutsk, Urges Departure from Russia

rbc.ua (Ukrainian) —

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued an official warning about a suspected pneumonic plague case in the Irkutsk region, urging Americans to leave Russia immediately. The embassy cited limited ability to assist citizens outside Moscow. The warning follows the death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker in Shelekhov on October 2, reportedly after breaking a test tube containing the plague pathogen. Around 200 contacts were isolated, though regional authorities have not officially confirmed the diagnosis. The State Department maintains its highest Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for Russia due to risks of unlawful detention and safety threats. President Donald Trump acknowledged the situation and offered U.S. assistance, claiming pathogens have become stronger and drugs less effective.
