Indian shares fall in early trade; Nifty near 22,650
Indian equity benchmarks traded sharply lower in early trade on Tuesday, with the Nifty near the 22,650 mark, weighed down by weak global cues, surging crude oil prices, and rising global bond yields. All sectoral indices on the NSE traded in the red except Pharma, with Media, Private Bank, and IT shares seeing the sharpest declines. At 09:25 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex fell 411.63 points (0.57%) to 72,350.63, while the Nifty 50 dropped 122.95 points (0.54%) to 22,653.55. Market breadth was weak, with 1,101 shares rising and 1,906 falling on the BSE. Foreign portfolio investors sold shares worth Rs 5,353.22 crore, while domestic institutional investors were net buyers of Rs 5,189.02 crore on 28 September 2026. The decline followed overnight losses on Wall Street, where rising oil prices and Treasury yields pressured sentiment, with the 10-year yield hitting its highest since 2007. Brent crude rose 1.53% to $106.89 a barrel. In stock news, Ellenbarrie rallied 5.29% on a Rs 481 crore contract from BHEL, while HCL Technologies shed 0.54% after announcing its intent to acquire Robotiq.ai.
