Asian markets mixed as oil prices steady after Wall Street's winning week
Asian markets traded mixed Monday after Wall Street posted its first winning week in three, aided by a cooldown in oil prices. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.7%, while South Korea's Kospi dropped 2.7%, but Australia and Hong Kong saw gains. U.S. crude rose 1.98% to $94.24 a barrel, and Brent crude climbed 2.5% to $106.93, with prices volatile due to uncertainty over Middle East oil flows amid the war with Iran. On Friday, the S&P 500 added 0.5% to 7,743.41, the Dow rose 0.9%, and the Nasdaq gained 0.5%. Rising U.S. inflation expectations and a 10-year Treasury yield near its highest since 2007 had weighed on stocks, but yields eased as oil prices pulled lower. The dollar strengthened to 157.53 yen, while the euro slipped to $1.1380.
