Historic firsts mark the incoming Senate class
The 2026 midterm elections produced a historic incoming Senate class, featuring the first Native American, first Muslim, and first Paralympian elected to the chamber, alongside other groundbreaking winners. Democrats secured control of both Congress chambers by flipping over 40 House seats and 7 Senate seats. Among the new senators are Josh Turek of Iowa, a wheelchair basketball gold medalist; Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan, the son of Egyptian immigrants; and Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. Julia Letlow of Louisiana becomes the state's first Republican woman senator, while Chris Pappas of New Hampshire is the first openly gay man in the Senate. Annie Andrews pulled an upset in South Carolina as its first female senator, and Democrats won Senate seats in reliably Republican Texas and Kansas for the first time in decades. These victories reflect a significant political shift in the midterm landscape.
