Republicans Move to Impeach Defense Secretary Hegseth After Midterm Losses
Following the Republican losses in the midterm elections, Representative Thomas Massie announced he will introduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth when the House reconvenes next week. Massie accuses Hegseth of starting the Iran war without congressional approval. Hegseth defended his tenure in a video, dismissing Massie as a "disgruntled, defeated congressman" filing "sham articles." Massie suggested President Trump should fire Hegseth while the Republican-controlled Senate can still confirm a successor, warning his impeachment effort is "a much milder version" of what Democrats will pursue when they take Senate control in January. Massie's impeachment push likely has broad Democratic support and may gain enough Republican backing to pass. Vice President JD Vance also attributed the party's electoral defeat to the war.
