Tesla unveils Roadster with SpaceX thrusters after decade-long wait
Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a "flying" Roadster sports car equipped with SpaceX rocket thrusters at a Texas launch event, performing a vertical launch and mid-air barrel roll to revive the company's image as a brash innovator. The vehicle, in development for a decade, will enter production in 2028 as Tesla's only manual car, accelerating to 60mph in under a second with a 230mph top speed. Musk acknowledged it may not be legal in all jurisdictions, and customers including Sam Altman paid $50,000 for waiting-list spots. The Roadster will compete with ultra-luxury electric supercars, though Musk downplayed its financial impact on the $1.4tn carmaker. Tesla has discontinued premium S and X models to focus on robots and autonomous taxis, with deliveries falling 2 per cent in the third quarter.
