Israel launches West Bank operation after deadly shooting near Hebron
Israel has launched an anti-terror operation in the West Bank following a shooting attack that killed two soldiers near Hebron, with forces searching for weapons and terror infrastructure. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened a large-scale military operation in the area. The operation, involving the army, intelligence services, border police, and civil administration, is focused on the Hebron region and expected to last several days. Two attackers opened fire at a checkpoint Friday, killing soldiers aged 20 and 23 and wounding three others before being shot dead. Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the attack, which the group praised without claiming responsibility. Netanyahu ordered Hebron sealed and the military to prepare for a full West Bank lockdown, vowing an operation unprecedented since the 1967 Six-Day War, when Israel captured and occupied the territory. The announcement comes ahead of parliamentary elections on Tuesday.
