AI expert warns of 99.9% human extinction risk from AI

AI safety researcher Roman Yampolskiy has warned there is a 99.9% chance artificial intelligence will wipe out humanity within the next 100 years, according to his recent podcast appearance. Yampolskiy, a University of Louisville computer scientist, argues no AI system has been flawless and future versions could cause catastrophic disasters. He published a 2023 book on AI's unpredictability and uncontrollability, joining a vocal group of researchers issuing such warnings. Other experts dispute this doomsday scenario. A University of Oxford and Bonn study of over 2,700 AI academics put the extinction risk at just 5%, while figures like Google Brain co-founder Andrew Ng and Yann Lecun reject the idea entirely, with Lecun suggesting ulterior motives behind such alarmism.
