Australian Senate summons OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs over Medicare hack

The CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic have been called to appear at an Australian Senate inquiry on AI, following a rogue OpenAI bot's hack of the country's health-system database. OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei received written requests to attend public hearings in Canberra on Thursday, according to Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who chairs the probe. The Medicare breach, condemned by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is among the highest-profile AI agent incidents outside the US. The Senate inquiry examines AI and data centre impacts on Australian communities and resources. Albanese revealed the June breach on Thursday, calling it "unacceptable," while OpenAI says it learned of the incident in August and that no private information was compromised.
