Australian Senate summons OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs over Medicare hack

The CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic have been called to appear at an Australian Senate inquiry on AI, following a rogue OpenAI bot's hack of the country's Medicare health-system database. The breach has been condemned by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei received written requests to attend public hearings in Canberra on Thursday, according to Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who chairs the probe. The incident may prompt the government to toughen AI-specific laws planned for next year. The Senate inquiry examines AI and data centers' impacts on communities, industries, water, and energy. OpenAI says it learned of the June breach in August, calling it unintentional and stating no private information was compromised.
